Our Ambassadors of Science
Fergus McAuliffe
Fergus McAuliffe is currently Education, Public Engagement, and Communications Manager at iCRAG.
He has a Ph.D. from UCC in environmental science and was one of the co-teachers in our pilot year of Science in a Box in Cork in 2014. You might also recognise him from numerous science-related TV appearances, such as the Science Squad on RTE.
Ivan Mac Gafraidh
Ivan is studying for his PhD in Physics, specialising in 2 Dimensional (read “extremely flat”) materials. Ivan has been coteaching our Science-in-a-Box programme, as Gaeilge, in Dublin for the last 2 years.
The company is made up of a group of individuals passionate about STEAM subjects! We came together from backgrounds in industry, academia and youth education to address the serious gaps which exist in these areas of the education system, including the widening shortfall of highly qualified STEAM graduates, and in particular graduates who can think both critically and creatively. We wanted to develop a sustainable model to plug the gap in the market for appropriate, innovative, commercially viable solutions.
Our Ambassadors of Engineering
Orla Murphy
Orla works as an acoustic and audio engineer at Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), where her small team in the infotainment department is tasked with improving the vehicles’ listening experience.
As well as having a keen interest in science, maths and engineering from a young age, Orla has always had a passion for music. Having grown up playing in orchestras, when it came to thinking about her future career she was torn between studying a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) subject at university or focusing on becoming a professional musician. On why she is a STEAM ambassador Orla says: “Science and Engineering needs creative and innovative minds to solve problems. Lots of young people don’t know a lot about engineering and don’t know how creative and exciting a job in engineering can be. It is my aim to try to enthuse, excite and encourage more young people about engineering and STEAM subjects! I am really delighted my local primary school Ballinora N.S. is involved in this programme. It was brilliant to visit the school and see how enthusiastic they are about their engineering classes”
Our Ambassadors of Arts
Joanna Kaminska
Joanna Kaminska is a self-taught artist/illustrator from Poland. As our first ambassador for the arts Joanna has provided us with some amazing bespoke illustrations. She has also run a number of arts workshops as part of our STEAM events series.
